Del 1 av intervjun med Noel: ”I don’t know why a little episode today would restore my faith in all of music…” – 2009-02-09

Johannes: Welcome to Sweden Noel
Noel: Thank you, always a pleasure to be here
J: Always a pleasure to have you.
J: Have you heard anything about Oasisgeneration?
N: Nope, well I don’t own a computer. I mean I’m aware that there are various fansites around the world. But I don’t have a computer so I don’t have the urge to google myself or anything like that and see what comes up. But I’m aware that these things exist.
J: Aight, for this interview, some of the fans that are visitors on Oasisgeneration had the opportunity to send in questions to you and they then had to vote for the three questions that they wanted to ask you the most.
N: OK!
J: So I thought that we would start with the fan questions and then we have a number of questions that are more from my side, then we’ll take a few pictures and then we have a gift for you at the end of the interview.
N skrattandes: Oh really, wow… Is it eatable?
J skrattandes: Ehm, I hope you don’t eat it…
J: Let’s see…
N skrattandes: Have you just wasted that entire first page at that information?
J skrattandes: Yep!
N skrattandes: Wiping the first page out, wow, incredible!
J skrattandes: Yeah.
J: Anyway, this is your 13th gig in Sweden.
N: Is that right?
J: Yepp
N: Wow…!
J: Your second in Gothenburg
N: So really, on the avarage that is just less than one a year?
J: Kind of…
N: Well, we’ve been going on fifteen years something… Counting… Fifteen years, thirteen gigs, only our second in Gothenburg you said?
N: When was the first one [in Sweden]? Was it 1994, or maybe 1993 even?
J: It was one of your first abroad, 1994 I think
N: Yeah, it was at that nightclub
J: Was it Gino or…
N: Oh, I can’t tell you the name I just remember it had steps going up to the stage and light in between the steps…
J: D’you have any special memories from playing in Sweden
N: Oh fucking yeah, loads! Yeah, I met… I got really reeeeeally fucking drunk one night after a gig in Stockholm, where the Beatles played… What was it called?
J: Que Club, Gino?
N: Fuck knows, and I passed out in the dressing room behind a chair or a sofa, and everybode forgot I was there and they left and the club closed up. I ended up having to find my way out of the club. And we were leaving in the morning and I didn’t know where we were staying. And I didn’t know where the hotel was or anything like that. And I didn’t have any money. And a guy pulled up on a motorbike and he was from… ehm… He was seeking political asylum in Sweden and he was from a guerilla army called the shining path, he was from Chile I believe or, some bolivia… Something like that. And he recognised me and he took me ’round on his motorbike to a few hotel until we found the right one and I just made the plane in the morning.
That’s one memory…
J: Something that only happens to Noel Gallagher on tour…!
N: Hehe, yeah, fuckin’ fun night though!
J: When you played in Sweden 2002 on Cirkus, d’you remember these shirts?
N: Kinda… Yeah!
J: Loads of people wearing these… Including me and some fans that were waiting outside the venue before the gig.
N: Does kinda ring a bell I have to say…
E: It’s well worn!
N skrattandes: Yeah!
J: Anyway When you left the soundcheck, I think you and the rest of the band went off in one car and Liam was going by himself in another car and as it drove by me he saw the shirt and he was[gör pekande rörelse med pekfingret och två tummar upp]. Then some of my friends went to the party after the gig where you got to see the shirt. You said something like ”Liam has been talking about these shirts all day, can I have one?”, and one of my friends took his shirt off, think it was the only think he wore, and gave it to you.
N: Really!?
J: Yeah
N: Wow…!
J: D’you remember what happened to the shirt after the party? ‘Cos there was some kind of a fight at the party and Liam was pulled out from the party…
N: Oh yeah, from the after party yes… Yeah, kinda rings a bell… Yeah. Haha it happens a lot! But I don’t remember what happened to the shirt…
J: Ok, so let’s get down to the first fan question then. At the 3rd place with 12 percent of the votes there is a question from Visslaren, or the whistler in english.
N: Okey…
J: Can you tell us about your song writing process, how do you typically come up with a song? Are you disciplined, sitting down strumming the guitar…?
There isn’t any really set formula. It always evolves round a few chords on a guitar or something that I might hear in music that I’m listening to. And that inspires me to go and do something…
For instance, funny that you should ask that question, I wrote a tune for about five years (ago)… And I’ve always loved that tune but I could never write any words for it. And I got really frustrated that I could never write any words for it. Every time I sat down, I could never do it, never do it, never do it…
I wrote the words on the bus today! On my mobile phone!
J: Oh, what is called?
N: It is gonna be called Mile high moon. And it just came to me like that! For no apparent reason, I sat down trying to write that song. Well not sat down and trying to write, but you know got the tune and… And then today for some reason… Bang! It just came like that!
So I always got my phone nearby so I can text lyrics in to that. But it doesn’t follow… It can come from anywhere. It can be like jamming on a soundcheck, you know and one think that ”hmm, that sounds pretty good”.
J: But you don’t sit down thinking, ”hmm, I should write a new song…”
N: I dont really set aside time for writing and havn’t got a place that I go to, I found out really early when I was gonna start (my music career) that if I was sent away to write songs… I could never do it. ‘Cos I would sit there and I would have a tape recorder and a piece of paper and a guitar and I would sit there and go… [Noel himlar med ögonen]
So I always seem to write them in the middle of the street, or on an airplane or, or fuckin when I’m not… Or in the middle of the night you know. So ehm… So I don’t generally sit down and trying to write music. That is to difficult, I find that to forced.
I’m the other way, I just rely on magic. I don’t know why those words found me today. They bear no resemblance to be on the bus. They have no relevance for being on the bus. I don’t know what the fuck they mean, the just came to me. [Skratt]
In the middle of the swedish country side! I put that down to magic! That’s why I’m still doing it, that is why im still fascinated about writing songs. I don’t know where they come from! And why a little episode today would restore my faith in all of music…
And I’m thinking, why did that happen today, and why on that bus? I was watching top gear, and the words has nothing to do with cars… And I wrote that tune for so long… And there we go!
J: Can you tell us anything about the song? What does it sound like?
N: Sounds like the Rolling Stones…
J: And they’ve done quite a lot…
N: Sounds like Let it bleed or Gimme Shelter with the Stones.
J: Will it be on the next Oasis album or is it more something for your solo record?
N: I don’t know, I don’t know… I don’t make plans like that. Saying that this is for that and this is for that.
It will come to life when it is supposed to come to life…
